Foto Colectania: the reference point in Barcelona for lovers of contemporary and classic photography

Foto Colectania is a non-profit organization, founded in Barcelona in 2002, with the aim of disseminating and publicizing Spanish and Portuguese photography after 1950 and promoting it in the social, artistic, and educational context of our country. In turn, the project seeks to encourage visual and critical thinking. To this end, they hold exhibitions, activities, and itineraries and promote publications in their beautiful space in the Born neighborhood.

Over the past two decades, Foto Colectania has established itself as the meeting point for all lovers of photography, earning Foto Colectania recognition such as the ARCO award for the Best National Private Collecting Initiative, an award by the Friends of the ARCO Association was awarded by Mario Rotllant, president of the Foundation (2006).

Visit one of the most complete private photography collections of this era

Within the exhibition space hosting temporary exhibitions is a library specializing in photography. The conservation chamber houses a fascinating collection of Spanish and Portuguese photography of more than 3,000 original works by 80 photographers, all with great stories behind them. Considered one of the most complete private photography collections of this period, it has a clear public service vocation. The collection was complemented by the donation of the archive of the photographer Francisco Gómez in 2001. Foto Colectania has carried out extensive work to keep and disseminate this important work helped by additional contributions of other private collectors.

The new headquarters of Foto Colectania, has for the last five years been located very close to the Picasso Museum in front of the Ciutadella Park. It offers us the opportunity to enjoy impressive snapshots taken by great photographers such as; Joan Colom, Vari Caramés, Toni Catany, Ramón Masats, Oriol Maspons, Isabel Muñoz, Leopoldo Pomés, Cristina de Middel, Alberti García-Alix, Francesc Català-Roca. Joan Fontcuberta, Susy Gómez, among many others.

The temple of photobooks in the Born neighborhood

On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, the Foto Colectania Foundation has decided to open its collection of photobooks to show us some real jewels. First editions, curiosities and noteworthy books from their collection. A marvel! The last date available to enjoy them is next December 15, at 6:00 p.m. Just reserve your place on its website.

As well as this must-see place in the vibrant Born district, you cannot miss two other wonderful cultural institutions, which periodically organize interesting photographic exhibitions, the Virreina Image Centre.

The Virreina Image Centre

This free public museum is mainly dedicated to photography, audiovisuals, book publishing and literary festivals, and other events. Located in the impressive baroque building on Las Ramblas its temporary exhibitions are a worthwhile visit.

KBr Fundación MAPFRE photography center

This new Fundación MAPFRE project was founded to promote artistic photography and the international projection of Barcelona’s creativity and cultural dynamism. Located in its space on the Paseo Marítimo its a bookstore: the KBr by Juan Naranjo Bookstore specializes in photography and art books. The selection of books is outstanding, including the publications of KBr and Fundación MAPFRE, a selection of books and exhibition catalogs issued by the most important national and international museums, institutions and publishers, as well as a section of portfolios, special editions, signed books and out-of-print titles. They also have a small collection of objects by contemporary designers.
