Ideas to enjoy springtime in Barcelona

On March 20th, spring begins, our favourite season of the year. The days are longer, the good weather comes, we can enjoy the beach, the parks fill with flowers and we do more outdoor activities. We want to suggest these ideas so that you can get the most out of beautiful Barcelona.

A walk by the sea…

Barcelona is full of charm, in addition to its unbeatable location, it has a beach. And so we invite you to enjoy a ride aboard a sailboat or catamaran. Enjoy a unique view of the city skyline, a really memorable experience.

A picnic in the park

Barcelona has many parks, where you can enjoy a delicious picnic in the sun. From the Ciutadella Park, Villa Cecilia or Santa Amelia (in the Sarrià neighbourhood), passing through the gardens of Montjuïc Park, to those of La Tamarita or Sentmenat. There are so many to choose from, but we advise that the menu for this bucolic picnic comes from one of the many gastronomic spaces in the city, Funky Bakers, Origó, Frutas Selectas, Pa de Kilo and many more.

Classical music everywhere

March is a perfect month to visit Barcelona, especially if for lovers of classical music. This is when the “Barcelona Obertura Spring Festival” and “Barcelona Obertura Ciutat de Clàssica” festivals take place in the most impressive auditoriums in the city. During this month Barcelona breathes classical music and it is a joy.

Likewise, spring is also the time for “The Barcelona musical route”, a musical tour led by a professional guide who will help you discover churches, theatres, streets… explain surprising stories about the city’s musical past. , as well as anecdotes about musicians and artists who lived and worked in our city.

Sant Jordi (George): the day of books, roses and lovers

This festival is very important being one of the most emblematic events in the Catalan calendar. Every April 23, Barcelona becomes the epicentre of roses, books and lovers. Tradition tells you that it originates with the famous legend of Saint George and the dragon, when a knight rescued the princess and defeated the dragon frightening the town. St Jordi pierced the beast with his sword, and beautiful red roses sprouted from the wound. The knight gave one of these roses to the princess.

Putting the story to one side, we recommend that you walk through the city on this day to take in the atmosphere of its streets full of stalls selling books and roses, and that you take advantage of the occasion to give to another or yourself a book and flowers. If you are near Paseo de Gracia, we encourage you to visit Gaudí’s Casa Batlló, where this mythical legend is represented on the façade and in two special places inside the house.

Time to enjoy the terraces!

The sun and good weather invite you to leave the house, take a walk and have a drink on a terrace and feel the spring breeze. Barcelona has many options. Both terraces at street level and on the rooftops of many hotels, which are open to the public. Enjoy the views while you toast in a very special surroundings. Some of our favourite rooftop terraces are The Hoxton Poblenou Hotel, the The Claris hotel, The Central del Raval, The Casa Bonay hotel, The Fiskebar, the Pez Vela, The Els Pescadors restaurant, The Les Filles Café The Flax&Kale on Tallers Street, among others.

Go to the beach

In summer the beaches of Barcelona are quite busy. However, enjoying them in spring is just perfect. It’s not so hot, there are fewer people and the atmosphere is wonderful. If you feel like it, you can even take a dip or play paddle tennis or skate along the Paseo Marítimo to the Forum.

Concerts and music festivals

Spring is the time for music festivals. This is the case of Primavera Sound with a lineup featuring Depeche Mode, Rosalía, Blur and Kendrick Lamar.  The Sónar festival, celebrating its 30th anniversary, will feature Bicep, Fever Ray and Laurent Garnier, among many others. During these months the city will be filled with a lot of life, joy and music, with many other concerts and major festivals.

Commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Picasso’s death

Although the painter from Malaga was neither born nor died in Barcelona, he did live and paint here for a long time. This year, the Fundació Joan Miró and the Picasso Museum, within the framework of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the death of Pablo Picasso and coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the death of Joan Miró, will organise the exhibition “Miró-Picasso”, which will take place simultaneously at both centres. It is the first time that the Fundació and the Museum have jointly organised and produced a single exhibition in two institutions that, in themselves, are a clear manifestation of the intense and extensive relationship that Miró and Picasso maintained with the city. Also related to the commemoration of the half century since the death of the Malaga genius, the Design Museum will host the exhibition “The will of Picasso. The ceramics that inspired the artist”, with 16 ceramic pieces given by the artist himself.
