David Lang: Prisoner of the State - national premiere. Co-commissioned with the New York Philharmonic, the De Doelen Concert Hall, the Barbican Centre, the Bochum Symphony Orchestra, the Concertgebouw Brugge and Malmö Opera.
The American post-minimalist composer David Lang (Los Angeles, 1957) offers a contemporary adaptation of Beethoven’s Fidelio with Prisoner of the state. The opera tells the story of a woman who disguises herself as a prison guard to rescue her husband from unjust political imprisonment, transforming Beethoven’s opera into an exploration of the defiance of a malign government. The orchestra – an essential part of the work – plays the role of observer in this opera staged under the direction of Elkhanah Pulitzer.
