Dmitri Shostakovich: 24 Preludes and Fugues, op. 87
The idea of composing in the twenty-four possible combinations of tonality and modality has seduced many composers throughout history. A good example is Shostakovich, whose 50th death is commemorated this year and who wrote one of the best works under this premise: his Preludes and Fugues op. 87, inspired by J. S. Bach’s great work The Well-Tempered Clavier. The Russian pianist Yulianna Avdeeva has chosen this enormous score, which lasts more than two hours, for a new visit to the Palau de la Música Catalana.
