A festival in full growth
Recent editions of the festival have experienced significant growth, expanding their horizons with new venues and presenting more innovative events than ever. Last year, the expansion transcended conventional limits, encompassing iconic venues such as La Paloma and Tívoli, using almost twenty spaces.
Due to the overwhelming success of the event, tickets are selling out fast. This notable increase in supply and participation reflects the sustained growth of an event that is approaching the significant mark of its 60th anniversary. Over this time the event has been committed to a constantly evolving celebration, exploring and highlighting the richness and diversity of jazz.
A more feminine programme betting on the Big Band
The attractiveness of the programme is undeniable, shown by the participation of legends from the world of jazz such as the American double bassist Ron Carter, the Cuban Afro-Cuban jazz pianist Chucho Valdés or the Dominican Latin jazz pianist Michel Camilo, who received the festival’s gold medal last year. In addition, renowned international figures also join, such as the film director and saxophonist Woody Allen, who has visited the festival on several occasions, performing with the New Orleans Jazz Band.
Every year the festival reinforces its commitment to local talent, supporting the fundamental role of local artists on the music scene, with names as relevant as the trumpeter, saxophonist and singer Andrea Motis or the pianist, improviser and composer Marco Mezquida. Additionally visibility is given to women in the genre, providing them with a meaningful platform to express their art and contribute to the diversity of the event. The festival also reserves a prominent place for the Big Band.
The Jamboree room and the origins of the event
The current festival dates back to the beginning of the 1960s, when businessman Joan Rosselló transformed the Brindis bar, located at number 17 Plaza Real, into a jazz cellar with international aspirations. The new Jamboree hall, a term in Zulu that means “gathering of tribes”, put Barcelona on the tour circuit of the great jazz stars.
In 1966, Rosselló launched the first Barcelona International Jazz Festival. The Palau de la Música Catalana was the venue for the first concert, a historic event that featured the presence of pianist and composer Dave Brubeck and his quartet. Figures of the stature of Sonny Rollins, Max Roach, Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto were also present at this first edition. In successive years, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington and Charlie Mingus, among others, joined the impressive program.
De Cajón!: a festival within the festival
Since its debut in 2016, De Cajón! has become an essential component of the vibrant celebration that characterises the Voll-Damm Jazz Festival Barcelona. This outstanding flamenco cycle has witnessed the participation of renowned artists, among which, figures such as Estrella Morente, Antonio Carmona, Duquende, Tomatito and Vicente Amigo stand out, having elevated the musical experience with their virtuosity and passion. This event is not only an independent cycle, but is presented as a festival within the festival.
In this way, De Cajón! presents a dozen of the most emblematic figures of contemporary flamenco. This unique event combines the richness of the flamenco tradition with the musical diversity of international jazz, creating a unique synergy that captivates lovers of music in all its expressions. The meeting of these musical genres enriches the programme, offering an experience that is sure to captivate all your senses.
